making a career last

In today's workforce, it's not uncommon for individuals to frequently change jobs. Many people accept offers, gain experience, and then move on to new opportunities. Rarely will someone stay with the same employer for many years.

But at Ciena, the opposite holds true. When you walk into any of our facilities, you are likely to encounter employees who started their careers with us and plan to retire with our team. So, what is the secret behind their loyalty and longevity?

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Angie Dunakin joined Ciena when she was 19. Now, 30 years later, she is a director of nursing. What started as a chance suggestion from a friend transformed into a story of continuous growth, adaptability, challenge, and passion.

"This company, this place, it’s just part of my lifestyle. Every milestone in my life – births, deaths, marriages – has been with Ciena by my side."

Early on, Angie recognized her passion for geriatric care and soon earned her certification to become a certified nursing assistant. She grew her skillset and explored other opportunities throughout the years. First moving to medical records and central supply before taking on a phlebotomist role.

In each role she held, one constant remained – dedication to our team. Angie utilized our nursing programs to obtain and finance her certification courses, all while balancing the responsibilities of caring for her two young sons.

"I’m blessed and I don’t think I’d have the same opportunities at a different facility."

flexibility and change

Several years into her tenure at Ciena, Angie’s husband was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia, a disease with a life expectancy of ten years. Treatment necessitated frequent travel. Thanks to her flexible schedule at work, Angie was able to prioritize spending more time with her husband and family during this challenging time.

After six years, he passed. Angie became a single mother responsible for two boys. In these moments, we’re all drawn to reflect on what matters to us – who we care for and what we want most from our own lives. Angie knew her answer.

"I knew what would make me most proud of myself – becoming a nurse."

paying it forward

Over time, Angie moved to management-focused positions to spend more time with her children. She initially became a unit manager and eventually progressed to her current position as director of nursing.

In charge of overseeing caregivers and residents, she observes similarities to her younger self in new team members joining the facility. Angie stresses the importance of staying dedicated to nursing staff, and how that dedication transitions to true care for the residents who rely on them.

“Whenever I’m taking someone on a tour, or talking to a new hire, I always make sure they understand that many of our nurses have been here for over 10 years. That’s amazing.”

Thinking about the future, Angie does not see her time at Ciena ending anytime soon. The support she has received, and continues to receive, is all the proof she needs to know that it’s worth sticking with her team. “I’ll be here until I retire. That’s my plan.”
