care that reaches everyone

At Ciena, fostering a culture of collaboration is a key focus for our teams. This teamwork influences the quality of care we provide to our residents. For many Ciena employees, like Mary O’ Brien, this culture can advance their careers through opportunities for professional development, skill building, and networking.

Mary joined our Laurels of Willow Creek community in 2005 as a receptionist and administrative assistant. Her roles called for frequent interactions with team members, residents, and their family members. Over time, she developed valuable customer service, communication, and organizational abilities. These skills were instrumental in her prosperous career.

“My [receptionist and administrative assistant] role helped me prepare in many ways, such as being the first point of contact to welcome all new guests and achieving a great deal of multi-tasking.”

long-term learning

Mary's 18-year tenure in her previous role equipped her with knowledge that remains relevant in her current position as an admissions coordinator. Her enthusiastic attitude toward learning is a testament to the positive work environment fostered within her workplace.

"Ciena’s culture of kindness and appreciation keeps me motivated every day."

- Mary O.

Of course, Mary collaborated with more than just her team members and leadership. Through our culture of doing things the right way, she’s built lifelong connections with the residents she sees each day. It’s those connections that bring real meaning to Mary’s career. Each day is an opportunity to make an important change in someone’s life. How does that impact look in her typical day? When asked, Mary immediately had a story in mind – one that happened quite recently.

making new memories

In 2024, a total solar eclipse occurred in April. Such a phenomenon was not expected to occur in the United States again for at least another two decades. Eager to witness this extraordinary event, Mary’s community implemented necessary measures to ensure residents could safely participate. Everyone who saw the 2024 eclipse has their story. But one sticks with Mary to this day.

“When I took an elderly guest outside to see the solar eclipse, she turned to me and said, ‘I thought I would never get to see that in my lifetime.’ It was truly the most touching encounter I could ever imagine sharing with her. Moments like these make me so grateful for the opportunity to do what I do.”

career that matters

In a world so fueled by digital experience, it’s become increasingly rare to realize the impact we can make. In our communities, every position contains a story of connection, care, and growth. Mary’s story is one of many at Ciena. It’s a story she plans to see out fully – to deliver more experiences, impact more lives, and touch more hearts.

“Working in a community that emphasizes teamwork has allowed me to build friendships that will last a lifetime.”
