a dedication to doing more
There’s more to career development than job titles. Growth often calls for additional education, knowing what personally matters to you, and balancing responsibilities between work and life. At Ciena, our benefits are built to support that growth with tuition reimbursement and work/life balance flexibility during planned – and unplanned – time off.
Meet Olivia Haas. Today, she’s a licensed nursing home administrator at Regency at Bluffs Park. But all the way back in 2017, she joined our team as a recreational therapy intern. Early into her internship, one thing quickly became clear – she was passionate about improving patient care.
Olivia soon accepted additional responsibilities as an activities aide alongside her internship duties. During her weekend shifts, she became heavily involved in building out our enrichment fall program at our Whitmore Lake facility – offering more diverse and interesting activities to engage residents by meeting their physical and mental needs.
journey toward leadership
It was no surprise, then, that after graduating with credentials as a certified therapeutic recreation specialist, Olivia was set on accomplishing even more. By making use of our tuition reimbursement program, she went back to school at Michigan State University in 2019 to become a licensed nursing home administrator.
This, alongside starting her administrator-in-training role, was made possible both through the encouragement she received from leadership and the flexibility our benefits offered. It seemed as if momentum was on Olivia’s side when it came to career development. But life is about more than a career, often bringing unexpected gifts – and challenges – when we least expect it.
pandemic, parenting, and persevering
In 2020, Olivia became a mother; balancing growing her family with the uncertain future of an unveiling global pandemic. It’s in these moments, where our culture of care, flexibility, and being all-in for our team members can make all the difference.
Today, Olivia is now a proud mother of two children. They’ve become familiar faces in her facility, visiting during her off-days and seeing the great work their mother accomplishes. Her residents love the company.
“I would tell, and have told, anyone who wants to grow their career with Ciena to go for it,” Olivia said, when reflecting on her time with Ciena so far – and her vision for the future. “If more people take advantage of the career opportunities available to them and grow within Ciena, we can do even more incredible things for our residents than we already do.”
