They can’t wait until I get back to work. Giving something that helps them get out of their room, that’s something really deep.

Building community, one activity at a time

When discussing treatment, it’s important to look beyond the medical lens. Our activities team is one branch that works from this alternate perspective, encouraging residents to participate in creative events and build trust with those around them.

Not only is the social aspect of activities important on paper, but it’s also something our residents directly ask for. Makhya has no shortage of stories of receiving requests from residents on new event ideas. Her job, in many cases, is understanding how to realize each proposal to its fullest so that everyone can participate.

I try to do activities they’re comfortable with, and most of the time the rest pick out what they would like to do. That helps build our schedule for the day.

Finding deeper meaning in care

“I don’t look for recognition,” Makhya said, when thinking about the meaning behind her role. “I come with pure intentions, a pure heart, and I’m here for the residents. I’m here to be the family and friends they don’t have. Or never had.”

In any role in our communities, building deep, emotional connections is incredibly important. Residents come from a wide variety of backgrounds and an equally wide range of needs. Makhya’s ability to focus on these needs and understand the true meaning behind the ask is what makes her stand out as both an Activity Aide and provider of high-quality care.

Finding your fit in our team

What makes someone a good fit for our activities team? Communication, a knack for planning, and knowing how to keep the energy up are all fundamental traits for success.

Empathy, too, plays a key role. Activities Aides like Makhya are often driven by a primary goal: being there for residents in need. Yes, arranging a bowling tournament is fun, but it also offers so much more – time to bond, time to chat, time to discover something new.

These are the foundations in building memorable moments and bonds that last.
