Over 18 years ago, Catherine Blanche joined our team as an activities director. This role, which involves planning events and celebrations for elderly residents, had been a personal passion well before her professional journey began.
In college, Catherine’s twin sister started an internship at her school’s Gerontology Department. Together, the twins collaborated on fun ideas for activities and built close connections with the residents. Regardless of differences in age or background, there was always common ground for meaningful conversations. This interpersonal aspect of their work continues fueling Catherine’s passion after all these years.

engaging with residents
An activity director focuses on the health and engagement of our residents – keeping them engaged physically and mentally. While every activities director follows general guidelines, we encourage each team member to bring their own personality to event planning. Catherine has honed her own distinctive style by understanding her residents’ preferences. “I love to plan parties, celebrations, and all types of social events!”
One of Catherine’s favorite events to plan are rehab graduations, celebrations for residents finishing their assigned therapy. On their last day before discharge, Catherine arranges goodie bags, graduation cards, and a graduation mug specifically put together for the highlighted resident.
When asked about a recent highlight, Catherine fondly remembered organizing a birthday for one of our residents and her identical twin sister. This particular request held personal significance for Catherine.
“Being an identical twin myself, I know the importance of sharing your birthday. We had a lovely time and the Activity Department enjoyed sharing a birthday lunch with the resident and her twin!”

new bus, new opportunITies
One day, Catherine found a surprise waiting at her community – a brand-new bus. Field trips are regular occurrences for activities directors, and they often call for careful planning when transporting residents. The bus was a perfect upgrade.
“Corporate surprised us with the new bus. I had no idea it was coming! It holds three wheelchairs and is a game-changer for outings.”
Catherine's unwavering dedication to our team for almost twenty years is a testament to the ongoing support she receives. Here, she continues carrying out her passion for making an impact for our residents, serving others while continuing her story of growth.
