From the food our residents eat to the treatments they receive, care is a holistic effort in our communities. That’s why it’s important for our teams to maintain a diverse set of skills: housekeeping, maintenance, dietician, and of course, nursing. Each department plays a vital role in a resident’s treatment.

So, when a Ciena team member takes the initiative to understand each aspect of care, they’re empowered to do so.

Careers dedicated to care

Enter Haley, who first joined our team as an activity assistant – a role dedicated to building a fun environment that helps meet our residents’ physical and mental needs.

Haley quickly realized how small moments in an activity can make all the difference in a resident’s stay, such as a little laughter in a conversation. Wanting to explore more ways to care, her team members empowered her to cross-train in other departments.

I was drawn to the opportunity to bring joy and engagement to our residents’ daily routines

- Haley H., State Tested Nurse Aide

Cross-training in a healthcare career

In the kitchen, she saw the direct connection between nutrition and a resident’s happiness. In housekeeping duties, she picked up on the importance of maintaining a clean, safe environment to support residents’ well-being.

A little over one year after joining Ciena, she made a big decision. With all the knowledge she picked up with our teams, Haley earned her nursing certification.

“Now, as an STNA, I combine all those lessons – understanding that caregiving means caring for the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.” she said.

Transitioning to a nursing assistant role
In a little over a year, Haley expanded her career from activity assistant to STNA. Though the support she received from mentors encouraged that growth, we also offer multiple benefits that open more opportunities for all of our employees.

With flexible scheduling, Ciena team members can work hours that fit best within their personal schedules. Haley, for example, picked a schedule that helped her balance her community duties with school coursework.

We also offer multiple tuition reimbursement programs, like the Kristine Halsey Career Advancement Program, to lighten the financial load that often comes with higher education. In fact, Ciena employees may be able to access free classes for nursing certification to help streamline the process.
