The Respiratory Therapist assesses, treats and cares for residents with breathing disorders. The therapist assumes responsibility for respiratory care modalities, assesses, initiates and conducts therapeutic procedures; maintains patient records; and selects, assembles, checks, and operates equipment. This role collaborates with medical providers, nursing staff and the interdisciplinary team to deliver high-quality respiratory care services, ensuring compliance with facility guidelines in addition to federal and state regulations.

Responsibilities:

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate respiratory therapy treatments for residents in accordance with physician orders and established standards of practice.
• Administer treatments including oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, chest physiotherapy, suctioning, and other applicable respiratory modalities.
• Monitor residents’ cardiopulmonary status, including oxygen saturation, vital signs, laboratory values, and imaging results.
• Set up and manage respiratory equipment to include but not limited to oxygen concentrators, AVAPs, BiPap, CPAP and nebulizers.
• Educate residents, families, and nursing staff regarding disease management, safe equipment use, and respiratory care techniques.
• Respond promptly to respiratory emergencies and assist as needed.
• Document all assessments, treatments, and resident responses as per facility policy.
• Maintain proper infection control practices and ensure respiratory equipment is cleaned, disinfected and stored appropriately
• Provides routine clinical care including non-invasive ventilator checks, tracheostomy care, suctioning, resident evaluations, care plan development, respiratory medication delivery, supply changes and equipment management.
• Ensures department compliance within facility guidelines and state and federal regulations
• Establishes and maintains respiratory equipment par-level and required maintenance records
• Troubleshoots equipment malfunction
• Conducts quality assurance audits
• Conducts quality control monitoring

Education and/or Experience:

• Demonstrates knowledge of basic respiratory practices.
• 2 years' experience in a long-term care setting preferred.
• Knowledgeable of federal and state regulations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

• Must be a certified Respiratory Therapist
• Licensed in the state
• Completion of a two-year accredited Respiratory Program
• Current CPR certification or CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
