Holistic care at Ciena
Delivering quality care means more than assessments and treatment. A balanced diet, a comfortable environment, personal connection – all these factors play a role in recovery. As residents become part of our communities, we take on the responsibility of caring for every aspect of their well-being.
This is where our environmental services team comes in. Specializing in maintaining our communities, caregivers in environmental services ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for our residents. Their work helps enhance quality of life for each Ciena resident and plays an important role in our infection control program.
In celebrating our environmental services and housekeeping teams, we’re highlighting one of our caregivers who help our residents feel at home – while pursuing his full passion as a writer.
A writer’s discovery
Chinwendu is a housekeeping aide in our Regency at Bluffs Park community and has been a member of the Ciena team for over four years. Whether it’s cleaning the common areas or keeping an eye out for potential safety hazards, he’s responsible for keeping things in top condition.
But Chinwendu’s day goes beyond his job title, as he possesses a passion for writing. Long before joining our team, he drafted a love poem titled, “Man’s Precious Gift,” a deeply personal piece that brought him immense joy during the creative process.
“I enjoyed writing it and received such positive feedback that writing poetry soon grew into a passion,” he said

Nurturing creativity
Sharing personal endeavors can often be nerve-wracking. However, Chinwendu received overwhelmingly positive reviews when he shared his poetry with co-workers and residents, which served as a source of motivation for him.
Soon, writing became such a passion that he would find what time he could in-between tasks to brainstorm new writing ideas. The ideas go beyond poetry now – Chinwendu has started exploring longer form stories around personal reflection, and even puts together word searches for our residents.
“I want to show that many of us can still enjoy relaxed but challenging activities on paper. Many of the residents with Ciena enjoy these types of mental exercises.” he said.

Flexibility and growth at Ciena
Chinwendu’s combination of housekeeping skills and literary passion goes beyond personal satisfaction. He pulls from both to create a unique experience for our residents; one they may not find anywhere else. For Chinwendu, it’s an opportunity to continue exploring doing what he loves. For our residents, it’s a door to new activities and ways to stay engaged while staying in our communities.
Work/life balance is a large part of what makes a health career at Ciena stand out. That balance empowers our caregivers to do what they love outside of work – whether it’s creative activities, travel, or spending time with family – so that they feel refreshed and ready to accomplish more for our residents.

We in Environmental Services are not confined by labels or roles. We can do whatever we put our minds to, with skill and excellence.
