Kerri's journey to social work started early
Kerri’s time with Ciena started more than eight years ago, but she spent her entire career helping people. Her interest in social work, specifically long-term care, stems from her relationship with her grandmother. Staying by her side while helping her grandmother adjust to her own long-term care needs showed Kerri the true value of long-term care.
Throughout her time with Ciena, she’s been able to build strong connections with each resident. “I find immense value in building relationships with residents, listening to their stories, and supporting them through the challenges and achievements.”

Growing her career and her family
When Kerri joined Ciena, she was well on her way to becoming a licensed master social worker. Every step of the way, we supported her continued development. While working with us, Kerri was also blessed with two sons, ages two and six.
During this time, she’s worked as a practicum instructor through Wayne State University where she has helped supervise students through their internship experiences at St. Anthony.
“One of my co-workers was once my intern back in 2018. Many other students have taken on social work roles within Ciena.”

Support when it matters most
Social work is challenging for the caregiver in any environment. By nurturing and supporting a strong team, Kerri helps each provide the best care possible for our residents.
The support that she offers her teammates and others in the organization helps them through any situation they may face. This has led to better care and better treatment of our residents.
“It would not be possible without the stability of the team we've cultivated at St. Anthony. This strength allowed me more opportunities to mentor and to supervise others, not only within our facility, but within Ciena.”

Every patient has a story, and deserves respect
Working in long-term care is about relationships. And this is an area where Kerri strives to be involved in each resident’s care. She listens to their stories and provides support through their challenges and achievements.
She also facilitates a self-discovery process for residents – helping them understand their own situations and how their environment impacts them.

I value empowering residents to take control of their situations, and when it comes to working in long-term care, I know aging is inevitable and that it's happening to each and every one of us.
