Social Worker Roles at Ciena
At Ciena, we approach our residents’ treatments with a holistic approach. This calls for a collaborative effort across our teams – nursing, housekeeping, and social services.
Rikki is one of many social workers at Ciena responsible for assisting our residents with health, financial, and legal matters. Joining our Autumnwood of McBain Community in 2022, she serves as a source of expertise in her Director of Social Services role.
Her knowledge and guidance help provide peace-of-mind and a pathway to successful treatment – for her residents and their family members.
Day in the life of a social worker
Like so many other professions, there is no true “typical” day in social work. However, Rikki shared her unique perspective on how she navigates the ebb and flow of her work to ensure top-notch care for residents.
In the mornings, Rikki often focuses on scheduling and facilitating one-on-one counseling sessions for residents in need. These are typically residents who may be facing some social, emotional, or mental need that may lie outside of the nursing team’s specialties.

Afternoon sessions broaden toward the greater community with group therapy. In these communal meetings, residents connect with each other through shared experiences and build healthy relationships – enhancing their social well-being and stay with us. Before leaving for the day, Rikki ensures all residents records and documentation are up to date.
She highlighted that social work is not a field of singleness. There is not merely one role to be played. “While you may be only an individual, you are part of a team.” She said, it is the team working together to navigate challenges and variables that makes this career so rewarding.

The team I have here at Ciena has been a guiding hand and constant support for me at both the facility and corporate level.

Why Ciena
Demand for social workers is high across organizations. What makes Ciena stand out for Rikki? Unlike a traditional hospital environment, our communities plan for long-term care.
“I would say my favorite part is collaborating with residents, their families, and the staff to make the plans that improve some area of life for this facility” she said. Treatments may span several months, giving our social workers the ability to analyze and adjust their approach while building personal connections with residents and their families.

Of course, our support extends to our staff members as well. We commit toward their professional success whether it’s in educational initiatives or work/life balance planning. By assisting our residents to live their best lives, we will in turn support your career growth with competitive benefits and professional development opportunities.
